See the Sun at the Midnight Hour
Preparing the Way for the Christmas Imagination
September 27, 2025
Rudolf Steiner Branch members and friends gathered to celebrate Michaelmas by exploring the verse by Rudolf Steiner, “See the Sun at the Midnight Hour”, as a preparation for the Holy Nights. Rudolf Steiner gave several lectures over the years around Christmas time linking this esoteric verse with the sacred process of Initiation to spiritual knowledge. Steiner also gave a specific form and indications how this verse should be presented in eurythmy. These indications give profound insights into the process of spiritual development both in the ancient Mysteries and for us today. This celebration was supported by a grant from the Anthroposophical Society in America. Many thanks to Annie Haas for the photographs.

Twenty-six Branch members and friends gathered at the Mays home.

Melody Miller gave the opening verse – Victorious Spirit, calling forth the mood of the Michaelmas season.

Robert Mays gave introductory remarks about the theme: “See the Sun at the Midnight Hour” and its relevance today with recitation of the verse in English and German.

Christina Beck gave Rudolf Steiner’s indications about the verse, the eurythmy form and gestures, and their meaning. Christina led the group in several eurythmy exercises.

Bruce Kirchoff gave an introduction to heart-centered Emergent Dialog.

The group then held an Emergent Dialog on the theme. Melody Miller again recited Victorious Spirit as the closing verse.
See the Sun at the Midnight Hour
See the Sun
At the midnight hour!Build with stone
On lifeless ground!
So find in decline
And in death’s dark night
Creation’s pulse newborn,
With youthful morning light.
The heights reveal
The Gods’ eternal word,
The Deeps must guard their own
Peace, in their sacred shrine.
In darkness dwelling,
Create a Sun!
In matter weaving,
Know spirit-bliss begun!— Rudolf Steiner
