The Spirit of the Letter – Calligraphy

November 20, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 10:00am on Monday, repeating until November 20, 2017

Taught by Martha Kelder
Artist, Calligrapher and Arts Facilitator
The actual meaning of the word calligraphy is ‘beautiful writing’.  Anyone who can write by hand, can learn calligraphy!
According to Rudolf Steiner,  trying your hand at a different way of creating letters, can actually be strengthening for us.
“When a man consciously changes his handwriting,  he is obliged
to pay attention to and bring the innermost core of his being into
connection with what he is doing.  The etheric body is strengthened
in this way and the person is made healthier.”
Come and participate in the revival of this skill,  for the future of writing by hand is seriously threatened.  You will learn the Italic style of calligraphy, beloved for centuries for its gracefulness and legibility.  We will also delve into some of the colorful history of the written word as well as the origins of the letters.  You will also explore some of calligraphy’s  many uses and be invited to create a simple
calligraphed word or quote to be placed on a card that can then be reproduced and used for the holidays.
Fee for six classes – $120. to  $90.  (Sliding scale)
Materials – $15.  (Includes two felt tip pens and a workbook)
Pre-registration necessary.
